What Do You Put Under a Camping Tent?

When I’m setting up my camping tent, I always have a protective layer under the tent to help keep things dry, guard against damage from rough ground, and extend the tent’s overall lifespan. There are 3 main options for this:

  1. A footprint that is designed specifically for the tent I’m using
  2. A tarp
  3. Tyvek house wrap

Using a Tent Footprint

Personally, I like using a footprint that’s made specifically for my tent. It’s cut to match the floor dimensions and shape, and recessed so that it doesn’t stick out from under the tent (more on this later). A footprint will have loops or grommets to secure it to the tent, which eliminates any guesswork during set-up. Although footprints can be a bit more expensive, I’ve found the seamless attachment and lightweight design well worth the investment.

Using a Tarp

If I want a more budget-friendly alternative, I turn to a standard tarp. I can pick one up at a hardware store, and it’s sturdy enough to handle rocks, sticks, and wet terrain. The key when using a tarp (which will not typically match your tent dimensions) is  to make sure the tarp doesn’t stick out beyond the tent edges. Exposed tarp edges will funnel water under your tent when it rains. I like to roll the sides of the tarp that stick out, and stuff the rolled edge under the tent.

Tyvek: The DIY Approach

For a do-it-yourself solution, I’ve become a fan of Tyvek. It’s a water-resistant, lightweight material typically used in home construction. I simply cut it to be slightly smaller than my tent’s floor dimensions. With Tyvek, I get a cost-effective, durable, and lightweight option that easily folds up into my pack. My one-person backpacking tent did not come with a footprint, so a DIY Tyvek solution just makes sense

No matter which approach I take—footprint, tarp, or Tyvek—I always make sure my tent is properly protected from the ground. This simple step has helped me stay dry, comfortable, and stress-free on every camping trip.
