Teepees have been used as a shelter for as long as humans have been in the world. They are a fantastic design as they shed water and snow easily, and the wind goes around them rather than into them.

One person can put up today’s teepees, and they usually have more floor space than other tent shapes for the same weight. Teepees ventilate well due to their shape and modern materials, and being able to stand up inside them is a major selling point over other tents.

If you’ve thought about getting a teepee but aren’t sure, look at our list of teepee tents, see what we recommend for what situation, and check out our top teepees!

If you’re in a rush, the best teepee tent for a group or family is the Kazoo 8 Person Teepee Tent. If you’re a backpacker on a budget, we recommend the Alps Mountaineering Trail Tipi 2 Person Tent.

Best good quality and value teepee for ultralight backpackers with options of trekking pole substitution or suspending the tent to save weight.

Solo teepee with room for a stove and gear inside. A three-season tent that is good quality, weatherproofed, and value for money.

A great no-center pole concept teepee with great features like e-ports and storage packets but has a very low weather rating.

Some good qualities are let down by cheap parts, loads of guy ropes, and too much staking out.

A huge heavy tent that isn’t so easy to put up. Great if you need the room. Some low-quality parts.

Not the best quality tent. Probably best for festivals, backyards, and times when you're not expecting bad weather. Good for backyard activities.

Good backyard, car camping, and festival tent for fair weather. Lightweight and inexpensive but not ideal in the rain. Funky attention-grabbing design.

Now impossible to find! Great for ultra lighters needing a quality affordable 4 season teepee. Similar to Iron Wall with no inner mesh but more room.

Best hot teepee for backpackers. Lightest, most portable teepee with excellent ventilation, great waterproofing, stove jack, and quality parts.

Best Teepee Tents Compared

Best Overall

Kazoo 8 Person Instant Tipi Tent

The best overall quality family teepee tent. Easy set up with a high waterproof rating and a fully enclosed mesh inner.

🏆 Best Family teepee 🏆 Most Waterproof 🏆 Top Durability

Pros

  • Mesh inner and outer fly
  • Great waterproof rating
  • Two doors on the inner mesh
  • Fits two king mattresses inside

Cons

  • Not really an 8 person and their gear tent
  • Heavy, for car camping only

The Kazoo 8 Person Tipi tent is one of the easiest big teepee tents to put up and wins our award for the best teepee tent. It is simple enough that one person can set it up, and you’ll have this one up in about 15 minutes.

This tent is large, and you can sleep 8 people in it with heads near the center pole and feet towards the sides in a circle as long as you don’t need all your gear in the tent as well!!

This is the perfect car or festival camping tent at a rather heavy 23lbs (10.4kg) as it’s designed for sleeping lots of people, not for carrying long distances.

The mesh inner is made of no-see-um mesh and has a sewn-in floor and two zippered doors for easy access. The tent also comes with a rainfly to protect you from the elements. You can use the fly as a sunshade or shelter without the mesh inner and a peak height at the center of 120 inches (305cm). There is room for even the tallest person to stand up in this tent.

The floor of the mesh tent and the outer fly is made of Oxford polyester with a 3000 Hydrostatic Head rating that provides excellent waterproofing and helps make this a three-season tent.

The tent has four meshed vents near the top of the tent, and as the fly doesn’t touch the ground, you have 360° ventilation at ground level allowing this vertical airflow to prevent any condensation. This ventilation is great in summer, but it will be hard to keep this tent warm in colder weather as there is no way to close the gap and keep heat inside the tent.

The tent comes with an anti-rust central pole made of iron. The floor is reinforced where the pole attaches to the floor, making it easy to know where the pole should go.

It is nicely built and very reasonably priced, easily earning the award of the best teepee tent overall. Kazoo back this tent with excellent customer service and a two-year warranty.

Best Budget Teepee

Alps Mountaineering Trail Tipi 2 Person Tent

Best good quality and value teepee for ultralight backpackers with options of trekking pole substitution or suspending the tent to save weight.

🏆 Lightest most portable 🏆 Easiest to set up 🏆 Best ultralight 🏆 Recommended solo

Pros

  • Can use a trekking pole as the center pole, with tip cover included.
  • Has a hanging loop to hang without a pole
  • Double-walled tent to fight condensation
  • Covered vestibule for gear
  • 3.6 lb (1.3 kg) weight for backpacking
  • Meshed 360° vent around the bottom of the tent
  • Gear loft pockets

Cons

  • No tent pole included
  • No footprint included

The ALPS Mountaineering Trail Tipi 2 person Tent is great value for a 1-2 person backpacking tent of this quality. There are several tents at this price point, but this is the best of the tents for quality, weight, and features.

It’s light, not ultralight light, but at 3lbs 6oz, it’s not bad. This teepee doesn’t come with a pole. You must use a trekking pole that extends to at least 51 inches (130cm) or a branch. You can also hang the tipi from the external loop from a branch. It has a quick setup time.

The rainfly is 1500 hydrostatic head rated polyester, and the floor is a polyester taffeta with a 3000 hydrostatic head rating. These ratings are plenty for 3 season backpacking.

There is a meshed 360° panel around the bottom of the tent just above the bathtub base. With two adjustable vents near the roof and one in the door, you have control of the ventilation airflow inside the tent.

The bottom vent makes it hard to keep warm in colder weather, so it’s not really a 4 season tent. But the tent will be great for summer or as a 2-3 season tent.

The airflow is controlled by tensioning each guy line on and off. This slumps or expands the mesh around the base and opens the top vents.

This tipi does have double-stitched covered sealed seams, but reports suggest that the seam sealing is not the highest quality, but it’s ok for this price point.

Water can flow in via the vented base, so you need to make sure the bathtub floor lip is off the ground and is covered by the fly.

APLS is a well-respected budget brand. This tent is good quality for this price point and provides good value for a solo short trip backpacking tent.

Best for Backpackers

OneTigris Iron Wall 1-3 Person Teepee Tent with Stove Hole

Best hot teepee for backpackers. Lightest, most portable teepee with excellent ventilation, great waterproofing, stove jack, and quality parts.

🏆 Best Backpacking hot tent 🏆 Perfect solo hot tent

Pros

  • Built-in Stove jack
  • Inexpensive
  • Inner mesh sleeping tent with polythene floor for insect protection
  • No floor where the stove goes, so less damage to the tent from heat.
  • Good top ventilation system
  • Room for your gear if you’re not using the stove

Cons

  • Slightly more complex set up than similar small tents
  • Most people can’t stand up inside this tent.
  • Slightly heavier than the usual backpacking tent of a similar size at 3.2lbs.

The OneTigris Iron Wall tent is not a three-person tent, especially with the inner mesh room and stove fired up. It’s a roomy one-person tent or a cozy two-person tent in reality.

The door’s zipper is right next to the hot stove, so you’ll need to be careful when using the door.

This tent is an interesting heptagon shape, with seven sides, not the typical tipi six or eight sides. The internal tent is made of mesh with a polythene floor and is five-sided, so it can be challenging to sleep in this unusual shape with another person. The mesh inner covers the sleeping area only and hangs inside the external fly.

It’s quite a roomy little tent for one person, and the 3.2lbs weight makes it attractive to backpackers who could easily ditch the pole to lose more weight.

Great in winter with a stove or in summer for backpackers who want something more like a fair-weather tarp with insect protection.

Overall, a good little tent with a non-standard design will give people something to talk about on the trails. It weighs a bit more than similar tents but costs less.

Ozark Trail 7 Person Teepee Tent

A great no-center pole concept teepee with great features like e-ports and storage packets but has a very low weather rating.

🏆 Great Glamping teepee 🏆 Best Teepee for usable space inside.

Pros

  • Unique frame that eliminates the central pole.
  • Four screened windows for ventilation.
  • E-port for electrical cords.
  • Rear window awning for ventilation during rain events.
  • Internal storage pockets.

Cons

  • Need to figure out the set-up issues before camp.
  • No mesh on the door.
  • Long guylines can be trip hazards.
  • Doesn’t typically sleep 7 people.

The OZARK Trail 7 Person Teepee tent is big. It’s perfect for tall people who struggle to stand up in tents. The lack of a center pole means enough room inside for rainy days or two queen-size mattresses.

At 15lbs, with internal steel poles, it’s a family campground or car camping tent for people who want decent space.

It’s quite well put together for a cheaper tent but not very durable – the build quality can be lacking at times. This advertised three-season tent comes with the basics – tape-sealed seams, a bathtub floor, and windows that close from the inside.

Unfortunately, the door doesn’t have a screen, but each of the four windows is screened, so you can open these to let in a cool breeze. The teepee shape also ventilates well, with three vents in the peak.

Overall this teepee is good enough for long family car camping trips. The extra hassle of the badly translated instructions for its slightly more complicated setup is offset by the extra room and lack of a center pole.

Danchel Outdoor 3 Person Teepee Tent with Stove Jack

Solo teepee with room for a stove and gear inside. A three-season tent that is good quality, weatherproofed, and value for money.

🏆 Best Budget Teepee

Pros

  • Has a built-in stove jack
  • Weighs only 3.6lbs
  • Great for backpacking.
  • Double door for easy access around the fireplace

Cons

  • No tent floor
  • No inner tent. Just a single-walled shelter

Marketed as a backpacking tent, the DANCHEL OUTDOOR 3 Person Teepee Tent with Stove Jack certainly ticks all the boxes. It’s light enough at 3.6lbs (1.5kg) and can be hung rather than using the internal pole, losing just a little more weight for ultralight backpackers.

It’s ideal for those on a budget just starting in the backpacking hot tent arena.

This tent is a reasonable quality single walled tent with no floor and a waterproofing rating of 3000mm, great in the rain. It’s made from anti-tear polyester, which usually performs better than nylon.

The removable stove jack panel comes with no hole. You can cut it to size to fit the stovepipe you want to use. It’s made of a silicone-coated fabric and is rated for temps of 572°/300°.

At 5’2” (1.6m), it’s quite a roomy tent, but the wall slope is quite severe. As the tent has no floor, there is 360° ventilation around the bottom of the tent supported with two roof vents.

Without the stove jack panel and with the door open, this tent will also perform well for backpackers looking for a quick, simple shelter in the summer.

Winterial 6-7 Person 4 Season Teepee Tent

Some good qualities are let down by cheap parts, loads of guy ropes, and too much staking out.

Pros

  • Big 12×12 tent with lots of floor space
  • Rainproof top ventilation
  • Spacious 10-foot interior
  • Packs up very small
  • Easy setup
  • Good shape to contend with winds
  • Two side by side doors

Cons

  • There is no fly mesh on top vents, and it lets the bugs in.
  • Many guys ropes and stake to hold everything taut
  • No covered entrance.
  • No storage pockets
  • Water-resistant woven material floor

The Winterial 6-7 person 4 season Teepee tent is an interesting shape and design and will attract attention wherever you set it up. It has 10-foot ceilings, and its octagonal floor area makes it feel spacious and airy.

The specs say it fits 6-7 people, but it will comfortably fit four people and their gear. If you are car camping, you’ll get more people inside as gear can go in the car.

The 4 season rating is probably a bit ambitious. The biggest issue is its waterproofing capabilities. It has a waterproof rating of 1500, “waterproof” but will only stand short showers.

The floor is made from woven plastic that will let water seep up through it in heavy rain. You’ll need a tarp underneath it to keep the floor dry.

There are four vents in the sides and a top vent that draws the air up, but, note well, the top vent does not have mesh, and this is where all the bugs get in.

Winterial customer support seems pretty good, which is useful as the instructions don’t seem always to be packed with shipping. It’s pretty intuitive if you’re familiar with teepee tents.

Guide Gear Deluxe Teepee Tent (2/10 Person)

A huge heavy tent that isn’t so easy to put up. Great if you need the room. Some low-quality parts.

Pros

  • Roomy and able to stand up inside.
  • Separate vestibule you can attach
  • Solid plastic windows

Cons

  • Heavy – not a backpacking tent.
  • Takes quite a bit of time to set up.

A very distinctive-looking tent with a tall silhouette that you certainly won’t lose at a festival, the Guide Gear Deluxe Teepee Tent is certainly a conversation starter.

This teepee is a whopping 14’x14’ with loads of space for the whole family and lots of gear, and it also comes in a smaller 10’x10’ size. It takes one person about 20-30 minutes to set up or 10 minutes for two motivated people.

This tent weighs in at a hefty 23 lbs 15oz weight (10.5kg), the steel pole making up a lot of that weight, so this teepee is best for car camping, festivals, or longer family holidays.

The tent material is rated at 1200 hydrostatic head, making it “waterproof”, but there are reports of leaks around windows, zips, and seam seals not working. We recommend a reseal and further waterproofing on purchase.

The floor is sewn in bathtub style, but it’s a woven mesh rather than solid plastic. Although made out of waterproof material, the floor isn’t very waterproof. Make sure you use a tarp or footprint.

Interestingly, the vestibule is not attached. You put up the main teepee and then attach the vestibule.

Overall it’s a good size family camping tent but made with cheap parts but will have wet weather issues.

Outbound 6 Person 2 Season Teepee Tent

Not the best quality tent. Probably best for festivals, backyards, and times when you're not expecting bad weather. Good for backyard activities.

Pros

  • Lightweight
  • 7-foot interior
  • Double-wall – Inner mesh, outer rainfly
  • Quick setup.
  • Mesh tent perfect for stargazing

Cons

  • Not a tent for adverse weather

The OUTBOUND 6 person Tipi tent is a polyester tent with a single fiberglass central pole. It’s light and easy to put up for backyard campouts and sunny weather festivals. With a hydrostatic head rating of only 600mm, this tent is no good in the rain. It is advertised as a 2-season tent, so if rain is on the radar, this tent won’t keep you dry.

The ability to put up just the mesh tent or just the outer fly opens up the possibilities for families looking for an insect-free zone in the backyard to play. The floor area is perfect for a kid’s holiday space or for several people to crash after dancing at a festival all night.

Overall – this is a fun, inexpensive tent that is great for summer camping and celebrations but will not be in your life forever. It’s got great features for its price point but isn’t one you would take on long trips.

It’s perfect for picnics and car camping and especially good for summer fun in the backyard.

Vidalido 5-6 Person Family Teepee Tent

Good backyard, car camping, and festival tent for fair weather. Lightweight and inexpensive but not ideal in the rain. Funky attention-grabbing design.

🏆 Funkiest looking backyard teepee

Pros:

  • Holds up quite well in the wind
  • Top ventilation has mesh to prevent bugs getting in
  • Lots of floor space.
  • Very easy setup if you know the pole extension trick.
  • Huge door – double size.
  • Perfect for festivals, car camping, and backyard setups.

Cons:

  • No stove jack
  • Center pole can limit sleeping and sitting configurations
  • Not good for backpacking – heavy and bulky
  • Must be pegged to the ground, not free-standing
  • Poor in the rain

The VIALIDO will be easy to find in a campground with its tall conical appearance and unique design. This tent is a fair-weather fun family camping tent.

It’s a good smaller family tent with the ability to sleep four to five (smallish) people or Mum, Dad, and the kids. Even though the specs say six people, we wouldn’t want to try it if they were all big adults.

The tent comes with a mesh inner layer that you can use as an insect-proof place for youngsters and a polyester outer shell that you can use as a sun shelter.

The instructions aren’t well translated, but most people can set the tent up without them.

Weighing only 11lbs 14 oz, it’s made with materials like nylon, but with a hydrostatic head rating of just 600mm, it’s not rainproof in the real world. There are a lot of reviews that mention how easy it tears and parts that fall off. Unless you’re expecting perfect weather, it’s not one to stake your weekend bliss on.

It’s cute and attention-grabbing but not heavy-duty and best used as a fair weather backyard teepee or a family car camping tent.

OneTigris Smokey Hut Ultralight Hot Tent with Stove Jack (2 Person)

Great for ultra lighters needing a quality affordable 4 season teepee. Similar to Iron Wall with no inner mesh but more room.

🏆 Best budget backpacking hot teepee.

Pros

  • Ultra-lightweight 2.6lbs
  • Stove jack opening
  • Reinforced guyline points
  • Cold weather tent

Cons

  • Doesn’t come with a floor
  • Doesn’t come with a stove jack

Update: This is a good tent but unfortunately is now very difficult to find, and so we can no longer recommend it.

The OneTigris Smokey Hut 2 Person Teepee Hot Tent is a great backpacking tent for two people or one person and a stove – depending on how cozy you like to get!

This is a good-quality backpacking tent where you can replace the tent pole with a trekking pole or hang the tent from a branch to eliminate the aluminum 5’2” (1.6m) center pole.

We recommend that you use a sock to stop the center pole from ripping through the delicate tent fabric and don’t crank down too hard on the guy ropes.

This 4-season tent has a good waterproof rating of 2000 hydrostatic head and taped seams, plenty for backpacking or camping in summer or fall.

This tent is a single walled tent with no floor and has a respectable backpacking weight of 2.6lbs (1.2kg). It is also easy to carry.

This tent has a hole with a removable cover for the stove jack for a portable stove but no actual stove jack. Note well not all stove jacks will fit this tent.

This tipi has vents in the roof, but they don’t stay open by themselves, and with the stove going, condensation can build up. Prop the vents open with a stick.

This tent is seam-sealed, made from lightweight silicon-coated nylon, has quality waterproof YKK zippers, and is generally a well-put-together tent.

Our Tent Review Rating Criteria

Family-friendly – lots of space and super comfortable

The best tents have the room you need. If it says it sleeps 6, we like to see room for all the gear and the people.

The KAZOO teepee is a good quality durable tent with lots of room inside for the family. It’s waterproof when you get caught out and have to spend time inside it. It’s one you should be able to rely on for a decade or more.

Fast and Easy Setup

We prefer tents that don’t require a degree in engineering to set up and are ready to move in. We love tents that are intuitive to put up and have clear instructions. We like tents that are quick to assemble but still have all the features and amenities you want.

The ALPS teepee has a straightforward setup, which you need after long day hiking trails. It has a minimal amount of pegs, utilizes your trekking pole and a center pole, and has a mesh inner sleeping area and adjustable vents.

Portability

When packing for your next outdoor adventure, you don’t want to get bogged down by bringing an overly heavy tent. Backpacking tents need to be light, and family tents must be easy to carry.

Ventilation and avoiding condensation

The best tents have vents at the top and the bottom to allow better airflow. Also, it’s useful to control the ventilation to find the balance between ventilation and freezing at night.

All the tents without floors have greater airflow, and the IRON WALL with its floorless outer shell and inner mesh sleeping area give the best ventilation without letting in the insects!

Durability – how long will the tent last?

We value tents that have seam seals, use good quality parts, have a waterproof bathtub floor, and can stand some pretty crappy weather.

The KAZOO family teepee has all that. We expect this tent to last a decade or more and give it our thumbs up for durability.

Value for money for those with tight budgets

Getting out into the great outdoors shouldn’t only be for those with lots of cash, and so we like to see a tent that lets anybody head out for a weekend camping trip without breaking the bank.

The DANCHEL has a few drawbacks, but it’s small, light, has a stove jack and room for a friend, so this is the perfect budget tent to get you started on your camping adventures!

Best waterproof teepee for a rainy day

With a hydrostatic head rating of 3000 for weatherproofing, the KAZOO is the tent we would prefer to be in if it rains!

The One Tigris teepees SMOKEY HUT and IRON WALL also have excellent high HH ratings at 2000 and would be great for those who need a backpacking teepee.

Families and glampers can’t go wrong with the KAZOO teepee camping tent, our pick for a roomy, good quality, waterproof shelter that will fit the whole family, or the ALPS tent for ultralight backpackers with its quality and very low weight to space ratio. The OneTigris Smokey Hut Tent or the OneTigris Iron Wall Tent is perfect for backpackers keen on a wood-burning stove.

Happy camping 😊

Review
